A reason why he is a Forty: He is a board member for the Des Moines Water Works Park Foundation, which works to raise awareness and funds to develop, maintain and operate Water Works Park for the benefit of the public.

What drives him: Seeing a team come together. “My most recent project involved a large client, construction and design team, as well as dozens of consultants and subcontractors. Coordinating that kind of group is challenging, but a diverse team is better, faster, smarter and more creative than the sum of its parts,” he said.

An interesting fact about Van Loon: He’s an Iowa State basketball season ticket holder and enjoys doing things with his family.
