Holmes Murphy

Age: 39

Children: Carter Chase

Mentor: Ellen Willadsen, CFO, Holmes Murphy

Why she’s a Forty: She has been asked to speak at several industry conferences and events as well as being published in industry media. She serves as a mentor for Holmes Murphy’s Women Optimizing Women program, which gives support to women within the company. She volunteers through the church and school to support the education, growth and development of children. She coached the Simpson College women’s tennis team, serving not only as a coach, but also as a role model, mentor and adviser for the young women who went through the program.

What are your goals in your role at your company?

Continue to remain privately held and perpetuate the company through internal ownership by investing in our employees and community while maximizing our potential to provide meaningful data and insights to our leaders, employees, shareholders and customers.

What are your goals for your community involvement?

Being a good mother and being “present.” My son is growing up quickly and I cherish and value our time together. At times, this may mean being a cheerleader, coach, volunteer, chauffeur and teacher, among other roles, all the while seeking to love, support and encourage him.

What's your biggest passion, and why?

Developing genuine and meaningful relationships by encouraging others to believe in themselves and achieve their full potential while maximizing life experiences. There is nothing more gratifying than the look on a person’s face the moment he/she achieves his/her goal or experiences something they never considered possible.

What is it that drives you?

In first grade I received a perfect score on my spelling test. When I proudly showed my parents, they told me I spelled “turquoise” incorrectly and insisted I tell my teacher. In tears, I informed my teacher and she took the point away. The lesson: One, integrity is essential even if it hurts,  and two, you must earn your results.

What are your future aspirations?

I hope as a family to devote more time to giving back through causes like Habitat for Humanity and Christian-driven mission trips. I also aspire to help support the growth and development of youth through possibilities of adoption, foster care and/or foreign exchange programs.

Three hobbies: Traveling, embracing new life experiences, playing tennis.

Fun fact: When hiking in Glacier National Park she unexpectedly encountered a grizzly bear and her cub on her path.

ONE word: Benevolent.

What is your wish for the Central Iowa business community?

Local businesses align and intentionally try to find ways to support other local businesses (large or small) to strengthen and better our community. Set differences and agendas aside for the betterment of the greater good.
