Tell us four of your proudest accomplishments or accolades.
I am a previous chair of Iowa Women in Architecture, a nonprofit organization that works to advance women into leadership roles, educate communities and discuss equity in the profession of architecture.
I am an associate principal with MA Architecture, a woman-owned firm that strives to promote the health and well-being of communities, design places where people see themselves reflected and create meaningful environments for people.
I have been project architect for multiple community-focused projects, including the city of Des Moines Greenhouse Facility, the city of Des Moines Reichardt Community Recreation Center, Ballet Des Moines and Joujou.
I am a past executive board member of the Neighborhood Development Corp. (NDC).
What's your biggest passion, and why?
My biggest passion is creating spaces that positively affect people and communities. The architectural profession has the unique power to uplift people and places through thoughtful, respectful and innovative design. What we do transcends physical structure — it touches people and improves their daily lives.
How do you define success, both personally and professionally?
I feel successful balancing motherhood with being a leader at a growing firm. I work on inspiring community projects while being a present parent. I aim to be a role model for others in early child care, showing that it's possible to do both and advance as a woman in architecture.
Tell us about an issue you think more people should know about.
The 2050 carbon initiative aims for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 to combat climate change. This involves balancing emitted carbon with removed carbon, transitioning to renewable energy, enhancing efficiency and adopting carbon capture technologies. Achieving this goal requires global collaboration to reduce emissions and ensure a sustainable future.
What's an experience or memory that influenced how you saw the world or what you wanted to do in life?
In my mid-20s, I changed career paths from traditional practice, started a jewelry business, then a design studio and editorial writing. Those formative three years taught me about business, design and the importance of community. They directly affected my decision to join the firm I am at today.
What are your aspirations for the future?
To continue making a positive impact in the world by creating impactful spaces for people and communities. Lead projects that transform communities by designing spaces that promote well-being, sustainability and a strong sense of community.
What's one piece of advice you'd give to a young professional?
There is no one, straight line to success and happiness. Embrace the changes that may occur along the way. Find your unique passion, follow it and harness your superpower.
What's one regular habit that's made you successful?
I excel at time management, staying organized with daily tasks and prioritizing critical milestones. With two toddlers, I wake up early for exercise, ensuring focus at work and clarity at home. I tackle the hardest tasks first and methodically structure every hour for efficiency and balance throughout the day.
What is one thing you would like to see Central Iowa leaders address, and why?
Access to affordable early child care is a critical issue affecting families, children and society. High child care costs often consume significant family income, making it hard for parents to work full time. Quality early childhood education is essential for children's development, but access remains limited. Addressing day care costs is crucial for creating a more equitable society, where children thrive and families can succeed without financial strain.
What's one fun fact about you?
I was in a test math group in fifth grade in which we took three to four years of math in one school year. I took two years of calculus by my freshman year of high school.
